This is a fantastic opportunity to be at the heart of a busy Building Control service, supporting technical professionals, engaging with applicants, contractors and members of the public, and undertaking formal learning about the role of Building Control.
What you’ll be doing:
As a vital member of our Building Control team, you’ll provide high quality administrative and technical support across a wide range of activities. Your work will make a direct contribution to the standards of building work in our borough and our service performance.
Your role will include:
- Acting as a first point of contact for applicants, agents and contractors by phone and email, delivering a friendly, efficient and professional service
- Processing Building Control applications, ensuring information is complete, accurate and ready for validation.
- Creating and maintaining electronic and paper job files, scanning and uploading documents, and keeping records up to date
- Issuing Completion Certificates, processing Initial Notices and associated Final Certificates, and processing Competent Person Notifications
- Processing Demolition Notices and carrying out all necessary consultations
- Logging dangerous structure notifications and carrying out any research needed
- Calculating standard work fees, raising fee requests, monitoring payments and liaising with applicants to resolve any fee queries
- Carrying out research and responding to requests for property histories and document copies
- Supporting the team managers and registered building inspectors to meet performance targets and deliver a responsive, high‑quality service
- You’ll also have the chance to develop your understanding of building regulations and construction processes, with support and training provided.

Essential skills and experience include:
Experience working in a customer service or public‑facing role
Confidence communicating clearly and professionally by phone, email and in writing
Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
Excellent attention to detail and numerical accuracy when working with plans, figures and data
Good IT skills, including Microsoft 365 and database systems
A positive, proactive approach and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
Educated to A‑level standard or equivalent
Experience in a technical or construction‑related environment, particularly within Building Control or local government
