As a Principal Building Control Surveyor, you’ll join a high-performing team that deals with some of the most complex and high-risk projects in the city, including high-rise and public buildings. This is a leadership role where you’ll provide technical expertise, mentor junior staff, and deputise for the Building Control Manager. You’ll also have the opportunity to influence service delivery, drive commercial growth, and represent the council in enforcement and legal proceedings.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead on complex projects: Manage high-risk building control cases, including high-rise and public buildings.
  • Assess plans and inspect works: Ensure compliance with Building Regulations and allied legislation.
  • Manage dangerous structures: Coordinate emergency responses and lead assessments.
  • Provide technical leadership: Mentor junior surveyors and support team development.
  • Support commercial delivery: Maintain client relationships, set fees, and contribute to service growth.
  • Deputise for the Building Control Manager: Oversee staff and make key decisions when required.
  • Enforce regulations: Issue legal notices and represent the council in enforcement actions and court proceedings.
Essential qualifications/skills
Registered Building Inspector Class 2F with the Building Safety Regulator (minimum).
In-depth knowledge of Building Regulations, Approved Documents, and allied legislation.
Ability to assess complex applications and inspect high-risk buildings.
Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes.
Physically able to gain access to most parts of a building during its construction or inspections
Desirable qualifications/skills
Chartered membership of a relevant professional body desirable (e.g. CABE, RICS, CIOB).
