Building Control Technical Support Inspector (Career Graded)
Full Time – 37 hours per week
Scale 6 – PO4 Career Matrix (SCP19 - 30) £29,777- £38,223 per annum

About you
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who has an interest in all aspects of Building Control and allied legislation, with some experience in an administration or technical role and a keen interest in building construction and law relating to a statutory function. You will be able to apply any knowledge of building construction you have to practical situations and have a proven transferrable skills to manage and positively progress projects in accordance with our quality management policy and the requirements of the building safety regulator. Additionally, you will engage with customers, ensuring that complex or difficult matters are explained in a polite and professional way. You will have the ability to build customers’ trust to ensure they return to use our services again.
The Job Role
The post holder will be responsible for assisting team members in providing a building control service within Rochford District Council. The main responsibilities of the post will be initially technical support but there will be opportunities for plan vetting, site inspections of building work, enforcement, and administering demolition notices subject to further training.
Good IT skills, accurate record keeping, and effective communication skills are essential requirements. A full, clean driving licence and use of a car or the ability to travel around the district is also essential for business purposes for progression in the job but not a requirement to start the role.
To apply for this post, you must have achieved an educational standard where you have or are committed to working towards achieving further qualifications with the LABC having a substantial building control content. You will also need to be willing to consider continuing your studies incrementally towards achieving a relevant level /professional qualification from the CIOB, RICS or CABE and to meet the requirements to be on the Register of building Inspectors.
Starting salary will be determined by qualifications and experience and the post is career graded allowing progression within the scale after reaching measurable competency and qualification levels. The council operates an agile working policy. Provided that the business needs of the service and the number of agreed paid hours are reached flexible hours can be agreed.
Rochford District is an attractive area, with a mix of urban and rural spaces in a tight geographical area. Rochford is easily accessible with a main line station to London Liverpool Street (50 minutes) and London Southend Airport.

- To undertake duties as directed by the Building Control Team Leader to ensure the effectiveness, competitiveness and efficient running of the Building Control Service along sound business lines to ensure competency and service delivery, with full regards to the Council’s policies and procedures.
- To support the Building Control team in a technical support role in accordance with the LABC ISO Quality management system and reporting required to the Building Safety Regulator on operations subject to key performance indicators.
- Inputting and processing of new applications received, checking post being received is added to document management systems both received on paper and electronically.
- Sending out decision notices, completion certificates and related correspondence as as advised by Registered Inspectors.
- Maintain the workflow of the files by updating them in accordance with the process maps in the ISO quality management system as amended from time to time.
- To undertake other duties as may reasonably be required to support the operational needs of the service area and Council, including maintaining business continuity and during civil emergencies.
